Svínafellsjökull is one of Iceland's most accessible outlet glaciers, a sweeping tongue of ancient ice that flows down from the Vatnajökull ice cap into a still glacial lagoon edged with moraine debris. The combination of cracked blue ice, dark volcanic rock, and reflective water gives you a lot to work with in a compact area. Walk to the lagoon's edge and shoot back toward the glacier face with the ice reflected in the water, or move along the moraine ridges to find elevated angles that show the full scale of the flow. Overcast days are ideal here since flat light brings out the deep blues and greys of the ice without harsh shadows, though dramatic cloud breaks can add real atmosphere. A wide angle lens handles the scale well, but a telephoto lets you isolate crevasse details and ice textures. The car park is right at the site and the walk to the glacier edge takes only a few minutes. (Austurland, Iceland)
