Colborne Lodge

Colborne Lodge is a restored Regency-style cottage from 1836 tucked into the southern end of High Park, and its combination of historic architecture, surrounding gardens, and mature tree canopy makes it a rewarding subject in any season. The warm brick facade and white-trimmed windows photograph well when you position yourself slightly to the side to capture depth along the building's length rather than shooting it straight on. Wide shots that incorporate the garden beds and pathway leading to the entrance work well for context, while a medium telephoto in the 50-85mm range lets you isolate architectural details and textures. Late afternoon light in summer falls beautifully across the south-facing facade, and autumn is particularly strong here when the surrounding High Park trees turn colour. The surrounding parkland gives you room to step back for environmental portraits of the building within its landscape setting. (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
