Cromer Beach

Cromer Beach - Photo by charlielisa1 / 1

Cromer Beach stretches along the Norfolk coast beneath soft chalk cliffs, with a classic Victorian pier extending into the North Sea and a mix of sand and pebble foreshore that shifts dramatically with the tides. At low tide the beach opens up considerably, revealing wet sand that reflects the sky and creates strong foreground interest; at high tide the narrower beach pushes you closer to the cliffs and pier for tighter, more compressed compositions. The pier works well as a leading line shot from the beach below, and the cliffs to the east offer elevated angles over the shoreline. Sunrise is particularly rewarding here, with the light coming in over the sea and catching the pier structure cleanly. To avoid crowds in summer, head toward the quieter eastern or western ends of the beach. A wide angle lens suits the expansive low-tide views, while a short telephoto helps isolate the pier or cliff detail. (Cromer, Norfolk, England)
