Fähnerenspitz is a grassy summit ridge in the Appenzell region of Switzerland, sitting above rolling alpine meadows with panoramic views stretching across the Alpstein massif, the Rhine Valley, and on clear days all the way to Lake Constance. The open ridge gives you room to work in multiple directions, so try positioning the distinctive rocky peaks of the Alpstein, including Säntis, as your background while using the undulating green foreground for depth. Sunrise and sunset both deliver here, with warm light raking across the landscape and frequent low cloud layers filling the valleys below, creating dramatic layered compositions. A wide angle lens suits the sweeping vistas, while a short telephoto helps isolate distant ridgelines or farmhouse details along the approach trail. The hike up takes roughly an hour from Schwende and the trail is well marked; come in early summer for wildflowers or autumn for golden tones and better visibility.
