Ireland Park
Ireland Park sits along Toronto's waterfront on the edge of Lake Ontario, where five haunting bronze figures by sculptor Rowan Gillespie stand gaunt and hollow-eyed against a backdrop of the gleaming downtown skyline. The contrast between the weathered, emaciated sculptures and the modern glass towers behind them is the defining shot here, and you want to position yourself low and close to the figures to emphasize that tension. A wide-angle lens works well for including multiple sculptures with the skyline, while a short telephoto lets you isolate a single figure against the CN Tower. The glass beacon cylinder also catches light beautifully in the late afternoon. Overcast days soften shadows and add a somber mood that suits the memorial's tone, though golden hour gives the bronze a warm glow that reads well. The park is small and accessible, right off the waterfront trail near Bathurst Street. (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
