Grafton Schoolhouse is one of the most evocative remnants of this well-preserved ghost town, sitting against a dramatic backdrop of red sandstone cliffs and the Virgin River valley just outside Zion National Park. The weathered adobe and wood structure photographs beautifully at golden hour, when warm light rakes across the textured walls and the surrounding cliffs glow deep orange and crimson. Shoot from the road or along the fence line to frame the schoolhouse against the stratified canyon walls behind it, and try a wider lens to include the scrubby desert foreground for context and depth. Early morning light comes from the east and illuminates the front facade cleanly, while late afternoon adds drama with side lighting and long shadows. The site is accessible via a short unpaved road from Highway 9, and a standard 24-70mm range handles most compositions well here. Stay within the marked boundaries and respect the fence lines throughout the property. (Grafton, Utah, United States)
