Haleakala Summit
Standing at nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, this dormant volcano summit offers one of the most dramatic sunrise experiences in the world, with the caldera stretching out below you and a sea of clouds often sitting beneath the rim. The viewing platform gives you an elevated vantage point to frame the vast, rust-colored crater against the brightening sky, and the silhouettes of other visitors on the platform can add compelling foreground interest. Arrive well before sunrise to secure your spot, as crowds gather early and the best positions along the rim fill quickly. A wide-angle lens works well for capturing the scale of the crater, while a telephoto lets you compress the layers of cloud and color on the horizon. Come prepared for serious cold and strong winds even in summer; stiff fingers make camera work difficult, so gloves are essential. Advance reservations and a park fee are required.
