Kalahaku Overlook
Kalahaku Overlook sits at roughly 9,300 feet inside Haleakala National Park, giving you an elevated vantage point directly above the crater floor with sweeping views across the volcanic landscape below. The scene is genuinely otherworldly, with cinder cones, rust-colored ash fields, and shifting shadows that make the terrain look closer to Mars than Maui. Shoot from the railed platform looking down and across the crater for wide establishing shots, or compress the layers of cones using a telephoto in the 70-200mm range. Sunrise draws crowds to the summit, but Kalahaku often has softer, more directional light in the early morning with fewer people. Clouds frequently roll in by midday, so arrive early.
