Keonehe'ehe'e (Sliding Sands) Trail
Sliding Sands Trail drops you into the heart of Haleakalā's crater from the summit visitor area, descending through a surreal landscape of rust-colored cinder cones, volcanic ash fields, and lava formations that feel more like another planet than Hawaii. The trail gives you long, sweeping compositions with layered cinder cones receding into the distance, and the stark foreground textures of ash and rock pair beautifully with dramatic cloud formations that often roll through the crater below you. Shoot from the trailhead looking down into the crater at sunrise, when the early light rakes across the cones and casts deep shadows that reveal the terrain's shape. A wide-angle lens works well for capturing the sense of scale, though a mid-range zoom lets you isolate individual cones. Dress in layers since summit temperatures drop sharply, and arrive early to beat both the crowds and the midday haze that flattens the light. (Kula, Maui, Hawaii, United States)
