Hammersmith Courtyard

Hammersmith Courtyard - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

Tucked just off Hammersmith Road, this quiet courtyard rewards photographers with a striking arrangement of tall white columns rising above a landscaped staircase, creating strong geometric lines against the surrounding architecture. The all-white surfaces make composition straightforward; try shooting low from the base of the stairs to exaggerate the height of the columns, or position yourself at mid-level on the steps to frame the colonnade symmetrically. The courtyard comes alive in the evening when artificial lighting bounces off the pale facades, producing a clean, high-contrast look well suited to architectural and portrait work. Overcast daytime conditions also work well by eliminating harsh shadows across the columns. A 24-35mm lens lets you capture the full vertical sweep without too much distortion. The space is relatively sheltered and compact, so it rarely draws crowds, giving you room to experiment with angles at your own pace. (London, England, United Kingdom)
