Hammersmith Station Intersection

Hammersmith Station Intersection - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

This busy road junction in west London puts you in front of a striking stone building with ornate arched windows and decorative facades, framed naturally by a row of mature trees along the pavement. The architecture has a classic Victorian civic character that contrasts well with the movement of buses, cyclists, and pedestrians flowing through the intersection. Shooting from the western pavement gives you a strong frontal composition, while stepping back slightly lets you incorporate the converging roads as leading lines drawing the eye toward the building. A wide to standard focal length, around 24 to 50mm, works well for capturing both the architecture and the street energy together. Overcast days are ideal since the soft diffused light brings out the texture of the stonework without harsh shadows. Early morning reduces traffic and gives you cleaner foreground space, though the busier daytime hours add useful urban life to the scene. (London, England, United Kingdom)
