Hammetschwand Lift
Perched on the cliffs of the Bürgenstock plateau, the Hammetschwand Lift is Europe's highest exterior elevator, rising 153 meters up a sheer rock face above Lake Lucerne. The structure itself is striking, with the slender tower clinging to the cliff giving you strong vertical lines to work with, and the sweeping lake and mountain panorama below making for a powerful backdrop. From the top, wide-angle shots looking down over the lake toward Lucerne and the surrounding Alps are hard to beat, especially in the soft light of early morning when mist sometimes lingers on the water. A 24-35mm range works well for capturing both the lift structure and the landscape together. The area is accessible via a scenic walk along the Bürgenstock cliff path, and midweek visits keep crowds manageable. Overcast days diffuse harsh contrast on the white tower and lift shaft, giving you clean, even tones. (Bürgenstock, Nidwalden, Switzerland)
