Lion of Lucerne

Lion of Lucerne - Photo by Alexandre Breveglieri1 / 1

Carved directly into a sandstone cliff face, this 19th-century rock relief depicts a dying lion with a spear in its side, set above a shallow reflecting pool in a quiet alcove of the city. The natural framing of the surrounding rock and overhanging trees gives the scene an intimate, almost theatrical quality that rewards careful composition. Position yourself low near the edge of the pool to capture the sculpture reflected in the still water, or step back to include the full cliff face with the surrounding foliage as a frame. Overcast days work best here since direct sunlight creates harsh shadows across the carved relief and washes out the fine detail; soft, diffused light brings out the texture of the stone beautifully. A short to mid-range focal length works well in the confined space. The site is free to enter, easy to walk to from the old town center, and most crowded midday with tour groups.
