Svartifoss

Svartifoss - Photo by Cliff Weeks1 / 1

Svartifoss is one of Iceland's most architecturally striking waterfalls, where a slender cascade drops into a basalt amphitheater of perfectly formed hexagonal columns that fan out like a dark cathedral organ. The columns themselves are as much the subject as the water, so position yourself low and wide to capture both the fall and the full sweep of the surrounding geometry. A wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range works best here, letting you emphasize the symmetry of the columns while keeping the waterfall anchored in the frame. The hike from Skaftafell visitor center takes around 45 minutes on a well-maintained trail, so the spot is accessible but rewarding. Overcast days are ideal since the soft diffused light reduces contrast on the dark rock and keeps detail in both the white water and the shadowed columns. A polarizing filter helps cut glare from the wet basalt and adds depth to the scene. (Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland)
