Hog's Back Falls
Hog's Back Falls is a dramatic cascade on the Rideau River where the river churns through a rocky gorge, creating powerful, layered falls that photograph well in nearly any season. You can shoot from multiple vantage points along the walking paths on both sides of the river, with the old stone bridge and lock infrastructure adding architectural interest to otherwise natural compositions. A wide angle lens lets you capture the full breadth of the falls alongside the surrounding rock faces, while a telephoto compresses the layers of water nicely. Overcast days are ideal here since the gorge can create harsh shadows in direct sun, and they also allow for longer exposures that smooth out the white water beautifully. Early morning on weekdays means fewer visitors crowding the railings. The paths are paved and accessible, and you can cross the bridge to compare perspectives from either bank.
