Hog's Back Park
Hog's Back Park sits along the Rideau River in Ottawa, where a series of dramatic waterfalls tumble over rocky outcroppings before the river widens into Long Island Lake. The falls are the main draw, with rushing water channeled between exposed limestone ledges that give you strong foreground texture and natural framing. Shoot from the footbridge to compress the falls against the surrounding forest, or get lower on the rocks along the bank for a more immersive perspective with a wide angle lens. A telephoto works well for isolating sections of the rapids or catching wildlife like herons along the quieter stretches downstream. Overcast days soften the light and reduce contrast on the white water, making them ideal for long exposures. Morning visits are generally less crowded and the light filters nicely through the tree canopy. Parking is available directly at the park and the main viewpoints are a short walk from the lot.
