Rideau Canal Eastern Pathway

Rideau Canal Eastern Pathway - Photo by Jinil Patel1 / 1

The Rideau Canal Eastern Pathway runs alongside one of Ottawa's most scenic stretches of water, giving you a clean foreground of the canal with the distinctive green domes of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Shrine rising above the treeline behind it. Position yourself along the pathway edge and use the canal as a leading line pulling the eye toward the church, or get lower to include reflections of the domes and surrounding trees in the still water. Autumn is the standout season here, when the maples along the banks turn orange and red and reflect in the canal surface. Early morning light is ideal, offering soft golden tones and minimal foot traffic from the cyclists and joggers who share the path. A short to mid telephoto lens in the 50 to 135mm range helps compress the scene and bring the domes closer to the water. (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)
