St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Shrine
Perched on a hilltop above the Rideau River, this striking Ukrainian Catholic shrine draws the eye immediately with its five gleaming gold domes rising against the sky. The Neo-Byzantine architecture gives you strong geometric shapes and rich ornamentation to work with, both inside and out. Outside, position yourself low and close to emphasize the domes towering overhead, or step back across the grounds to capture the full facade with the domes stacked symmetrically. Golden hour light makes the domes genuinely glow, and a partly cloudy sky adds drama without washing out the detail. Inside, the icons and stained glass reward a wide angle lens for full interior shots, or a longer focal length to isolate individual artworks. The church is accessible by car and has surrounding green space that gives you room to find your angle. Visit on a weekday to avoid crowds. (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)
