Þingvallakirkja
Þingvallakirkja is a small, white wooden church sitting at the edge of Þingvellir National Park, one of Iceland's most historically significant landscapes, and its simplicity against the dramatic backdrop of volcanic ridges and open lava fields makes it quietly compelling to photograph. Position yourself low and slightly to the side to include the surrounding terrain in your frame, or pull back with a wide angle, around 16-24mm, to show the church dwarfed by the rift valley walls behind it. Overcast days work beautifully here, giving you even light that flatters the white exterior without harsh shadows, while golden hour in summer bathes the scene in warm tones that contrast well with the dark lava rock. The church sits close to a small graveyard, which adds foreground interest and a sense of place. Access is straightforward via the main Þingvellir parking area, and the grounds are open year-round.
