Öxarárfoss
Öxarárfoss drops in two tiers over the ancient basalt cliffs of Almannagjá gorge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, giving you both a striking waterfall and a geological story to tell in a single frame. Position yourself low on the rocks at the base to foreground the mossy stones and let the falls fill the background, or step back along the canyon path to capture the gorge walls framing the cascade on both sides. A wide angle lens works well here, and a polarizing filter will help cut glare and bring out the green of the moss. Overcast days are ideal since the gorge blocks direct sun anyway and flat light keeps the water looking smooth. The path down to the falls is short and well-maintained, but the rocks near the water can be slippery, so watch your footing. (Þingvellir National Park, Iceland)
