Lögberg
Lögberg, or Law Rock, is a dramatic basalt outcrop rising from the rift valley floor at Þingvellir, where Iceland's Viking-age parliament once gathered and laws were recited aloud across the assembled crowds. The geology here is as compelling as the history; you are standing on the boundary of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, with the Almannagjá canyon wall rising sharply behind the rock and the wide Þingvallavatn lake stretching into the distance ahead. Shoot from below the rock looking up to emphasize its commanding presence against the sky, or pull back with a wide angle lens to capture the full sweep of the rift valley. Overcast days work beautifully here, softening the light and bringing out the dark greens and grays of the lava landscape. The site is well-marked and easily reached on foot from the main visitor center parking area. (Þingvellir, Capital Region, Iceland)
