Silfra

Silfra - Photo by Diego Delso1 / 1

Silfra is a flooded tectonic rift sitting inside Þingvellir National Park, where you can photograph the literal gap between the North American and Eurasian plates filled with some of the clearest water on earth. Above the surface, the canyon walls rise dramatically on either side, creating a natural leading line that draws the eye through the frame toward the distant volcanic landscape. Shoot from the entry platforms or the shallow Silfra Hall section for wide-angle compositions that capture the turquoise water color against the dark basalt. Early morning gives you the calmest light and fewest tour groups, which matters in this narrow space. A wide or ultra-wide lens works best for capturing the scale of the rift. Note that access requires a guided tour and a drysuit, so plan ahead and book well in advance, especially in summer. (Þingvellir, Capital Region, Iceland)
