Þórufoss
Þórufoss is a broad, dramatic waterfall dropping around 18 meters into a narrow valley, and its relative obscurity compared to Iceland's more famous falls means you often have it nearly to yourself. The wide curtain of water works well with a wide-angle lens, letting you include the mossy basalt walls and the river channel below in a single frame. Getting low near the water's edge gives you a strong foreground and emphasizes the drop, while a position slightly to the side lets you capture the full width of the falls with the valley walls providing natural framing. Overcast days are ideal here since soft, diffused light eliminates harsh shadows on the rockface and keeps detail in both the white water and the dark stone. The walk in is short and manageable, but the ground near the bank can be wet and slippery, so solid footwear is worth it. A polarizing filter helps cut glare and brings out the green of the moss.
