Kerid Crater
Kerið is a striking volcanic crater lake on Iceland's Golden Circle route, where vivid red and burgundy volcanic rock drops sharply down to a calm, brilliantly turquoise-green lake below. A well-maintained path circles the entire rim, so you can walk the full perimeter and find your ideal angle, with the steep far wall reflecting beautifully in the still water on calm days. The contrast between the rust-colored scoria slopes and the otherworldly lake color is the main draw, and a wide angle lens works well to capture both the crater walls and the water together. Overcast days are actually ideal here since they reduce harsh shadows on the steep interior and keep the lake color saturated; bright midday sun can wash out the tones. You can also descend to the lake's edge via a path for a dramatic low perspective looking back up at the crater walls. Parking is right at the entrance with a small admission fee.
