Kings Cross Station Sculpture

Kings Cross Station Sculpture - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

The steel roof structure inside King's Cross Station is one of London's most striking architectural details, a sweeping lattice of white steel ribs that fans outward from a central column like a geometric bloom. You will want to stand near the base of that central column and shoot upward with a wide-angle lens, anywhere from 14mm to 24mm, to capture the full radial symmetry against the glass ceiling above. The geometry rewards symmetrical compositions, so take time to center yourself carefully before shooting. Overcast days work well here since the diffused light through the glass panels reduces harsh shadows and keeps the white steelwork clean and bright; midday on a cloudy day is often ideal. The concourse gets busy with commuters during rush hours, so arriving mid-morning on a weekday gives you more space to move and fewer people disrupting your frame. (London, England)
