University College London
UCL's neoclassical main building is one of London's most striking academic facades, anchored by its grand portico and dome that rise above a colonnaded courtyard. The inner quad, known as the South Cloisters quadrangle, is where you will want to spend most of your time; the symmetrical colonnades and stone archways create strong leading lines and frame the portico beautifully from multiple angles. Shooting from ground level at the far end of the quad emphasizes the depth and grandeur of the space, while a tighter telephoto shot isolates the dome and columns against the sky. Overcast days work well here since they reduce harsh shadows in the enclosed courtyard, but early morning on a clear day gives you warm directional light across the stonework with far fewer people around. A 24-70mm range covers most compositions comfortably. The site is freely accessible during daylight hours. (London, England, United Kingdom)
