Kjósarhreppur Lighthouse
Perched at the tip of a quiet peninsula along Hvalfjörður fjord, this compact red lighthouse punches well above its size photographically, offering a vivid pop of color against dark volcanic rock, grey water, and often dramatic Icelandic skies. The classic shot places the lighthouse in the foreground with the fjord stretching behind it, and a wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range works well to take in the full scene without losing the intimate scale of the structure. Work around the rocky shoreline to find foreground texture, and try low angles to emphasize the contrast between the red paintwork and moody clouds overhead. Overcast days actually flatter this location, softening harsh shadows and deepening the surrounding tones so the red stands out even more.
