Hvítanes Abandoned Pier
Hvítanes is a remote peninsula on the shores of Hvalfjörður fjord, scattered with crumbling concrete military structures and a rusting metal pier that stretches dramatically into the still water. The pier is the main draw, offering a strong leading line that pulls the eye deep into the frame, with the surrounding mountains and often glassy fjord creating natural symmetry on either side. Shoot from low on the pier deck to emphasize its length, or pull back to include the abandoned buildings as foreground interest. Overcast days are ideal here, softening the light and adding mood, while early morning can bring mist rolling off the water. The site sits about an hour from Reykjavík via the Hvalfjörður tunnel; the final stretch is a gravel road. A wide angle lens works well for the pier and landscapes, though a short telephoto helps isolate the weathered textures of the old structures. (Hvítanes, Hvalfjörður, Iceland)
