Macquarie Lighthouse is Australia's oldest lighthouse site, sitting atop the rugged sandstone cliffs of South Head with sweeping views over the Pacific Ocean entrance to Sydney Harbour. The lighthouse itself makes a strong subject against dramatic skies, and you can frame it with the clifftop vegetation in the foreground or use the surrounding heritage walls for compositional depth. The rocky cliff edges to the east offer wide-angle shots looking back toward the lighthouse with crashing surf below, while a longer lens lets you compress the structure against distant harbour traffic. Golden hour light catches the pale sandstone beautifully, and overcast days bring out the drama of the ocean and cliffs without harsh shadows. The site is accessible via Old South Head Road in Vaucluse, with free street parking nearby; stay aware of cliff edges, especially on windy days, as drops are steep and sudden.
