Hornby Lighthouse
Hornby Lighthouse sits at the very tip of South Head, where Sydney Harbour opens out to the Pacific Ocean, making it one of the most dramatically positioned lighthouses in Australia. The bold red and white stripes of the tower photograph beautifully against blue sky or stormy clouds, and you have a wide range of compositions to work with: tight shots of the tower itself, wider frames that include the sandstone cliffs and crashing surf below, or sweeping views back across the harbour toward the city. Morning light hits the eastern face of the lighthouse cleanly, while late afternoon wraps the western side in warm tones with the harbour as your backdrop. A standard zoom or wide angle lens handles most situations well here. The walk from Watsons Bay takes about 20 minutes along a well-maintained trail, and winter visits give you a chance to spot humpback whales passing offshore.
