Sólheimajökull
Sólheimajökull is a glacial tongue of the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap in southern Iceland, where fractured blue ice, ash-streaked crevasses, and a meltwater lagoon at the glacier's edge combine to create a dramatic and otherworldly scene. From the parking area, a short walk brings you to the lagoon, where floating ice chunks and reflections make for strong foreground interest with the glacier rising behind. Work the shoreline to find different angles on the ice face, and look for the dark volcanic ash layers running through the ice, which add striking contrast and texture. Overcast days are ideal here since flat light eliminates harsh shadows and brings out the deep blues in the ice; bright sun can wash out the detail. A wide angle lens handles the sweeping glacier views well, while a telephoto lets you isolate crevasses and ice formations. Wear sturdy footwear for the gravel path. (Suðurland, Iceland)
