Standing at the top of Skógafoss rather than the base gives you a completely different perspective on one of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls. From the lookout platform, reached by climbing roughly 370 steps up the steep staircase alongside the cascade, you get sweeping views over the surrounding landscape, the river winding toward the coast, and on clear days, the ocean in the distance. A wide angle lens works well here to capture both the immediate foreground and the broad valley stretching below. Overcast days are actually ideal since they eliminate harsh shadows and keep the greens saturated, though a light rain will put a rainbow over the falls when the sun breaks through. Arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds that build quickly, especially in summer. The stairs are manageable but can be slippery, so wear grippy footwear. (Skógar, Southern Region, Iceland)
