Stakkholtsgjá Canyon
Stakkholtsgjá is a dramatic slot canyon in the Þórsmörk highlands, where towering 100-meter palagonite cliffs close in around you as you follow a shallow stream deep into the gorge. The narrow walls, draped in moss and streaked with water seepage, create a moody, enclosed atmosphere that rewards wide-angle lenses in the 14-24mm range. Shoot looking ahead into the canyon to emphasize the converging walls, or turn back toward the entrance for a natural frame effect with light pouring in from outside. Overcast days are ideal here since the high cliffs block direct sun anyway, making the soft diffused light flattering for the rich greens and dark basalt tones. The hike involves wading through a shallow stream, so waterproof footwear is essential. Visit in summer for the most lush vegetation, and arrive early to have the canyon to yourself before tour groups arrive. (Þórsmörk, South Iceland, Iceland)
