Climbing the staircase beside Skógafoss opens up a trail that follows the Skógá River upstream through an entirely different side of Iceland, away from the crowds below and into a landscape of rolling highland terrain dotted with more than twenty cascading waterfalls. The falls vary in character, from wide curtains to narrow plunges, giving you constantly changing compositions as you move along the path. Shoot looking back downstream to include the river as a leading line, or get close to individual falls with a wide angle lens to emphasize scale against the open sky. Overcast days work beautifully here, softening the light and bringing out the deep greens of the mossy banks without harsh shadows. Wear waterproof footwear as the trail gets muddy and some of the best foreground positions near the water's edge are wet underfoot. Budget at least three to four hours if you want to reach the upper falls. (Skógar, Iceland)
