University of Toronto

University of Toronto - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

The front campus of the University of Toronto is one of Canada's most impressive collections of Victorian and Romanesque Revival architecture, centered around University College and the sweeping lawn that opens up in front of it. Shooting from the middle of the lawn gives you a strong symmetrical composition with the building's ornate stone facade as your anchor, while moving to either side lets you work in the surrounding trees as natural framing. The warm light of late afternoon falls directly on the south-facing stonework, bringing out the texture of the carved details and the richness of the sandstone. A moderate wide angle lens in the 24 to 35mm range works well for capturing the full facade without distortion. The campus is publicly accessible year-round, and the lawn is particularly striking in autumn when the surrounding trees turn and fall color adds contrast against the grey stone.
