WoZoCo
Designed by MVRDV and completed in 1997, WoZoCo is a striking residential complex in Amsterdam where thirteen apartment units cantilever dramatically from the northern facade, suspended in mid-air on massive steel beams. The overhanging volumes, each clad in different materials and colors, create a composition that looks almost impossibly bold from street level. Position yourself on the path directly in front of the building and shoot upward with a wide angle lens, around 16 to 24mm, to exaggerate the cantilevers and emphasize the sense of weight and tension. A slight low angle from the northwest corner lets you capture multiple projecting units receding into the frame. Overcast days work particularly well here since the flat light brings out the texture and color variation across the facade without harsh shadows. The building sits in a quiet residential neighborhood and is easily accessible on foot or by bike. (Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands)
