Eyjafjallajökull

Gígjökull is an outlet glacier tumbling down from the Eyjafjallajökull ice cap, feeding into the moraine-edged lagoon of Lónið below. The combination of fractured blue ice, dark volcanic debris, and still reflective water makes this one of Iceland's most layered and dramatic compositions. You can frame the glacier tongue using the lagoon in the foreground to pick up reflections on calm days, or work the shoreline to find leading lines through the rocky moraine toward the ice. Overcast skies are actually your friend here, softening contrast and bringing out the deep blues in the ice without harsh shadows. Midday works well on cloudy days, though golden hour light in summer can add warmth to the surrounding hills. A wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range lets you capture the full scale of the scene. The site is accessible from Route 1 via a short drive south; wear sturdy footwear for the uneven terrain near the lake edge. (Rangárþing eystra, South Iceland, Iceland)
