Capstone Hill and the Kate Frolov Memorial
Capstone Hill is a grassy headland that juts out between Ilfracombe's harbour and the open bay, easily reached on foot from the town centre. The hill sits low enough to feel accessible but high enough to give you wide, unobstructed views across Ilfracombe Bay and back over the town. A circular path runs around the headland, offering shifting angles as you move along it. At the top stands a small bronze statue of Ekaterine Frolov, a fourteen year old Russian girl who was studying English in Ilfracombe when she died after falling from nearby cliffs in fog in 2000. Her family commissioned the statue, which was installed in 2009, and it has become a quiet focal point on the hill. For photographers, the figure works well against the open sky and water below, and the story behind it gives the image weight beyond the view. The headland is open at all times and catches evening light well from the west. (Ilfracombe, Devon, England)
