Verity

Verity is a tall bronze and stainless steel sculpture by Damien Hirst, sitting on the pier at the entrance to Ilfracombe Harbour. The figure stands facing out over the Bristol Channel toward South Wales with his sword raised. It dominates the pier and works well as a subject from both close up and as a piece within the whole harbour. Up close you get the detail of the sculpture against the sky and water. From further back along the harbour wall or from the water's edge, it reads as a striking silhouette against the open channel, particularly at sunrise when the light comes from behind you to the east. The sculpture changes character significantly depending on light and weather. Overcast days flatten it out, while strong directional light at either end of the day brings out the form and texture of the bronze surfaces. The scultpure is easily accessible during various lighting conditions since the pier is open to the public 24 hours a day. (Ilfracombe, Devon, England)
