Ilfracombe Harbour

Ilfracombe Harbour is the largest working harbour on the North Devon coast. The harbour itself is compact and walkable, which makes it easy to move between vantage points without covering much ground. The entrance is framed by Lantern Hill, a steep rocky outcrop topped by St Nicholas Chapel, a 14th century building that has served as a lighthouse since at least the reign of Henry VIII. On the pier at the harbour mouth stands Verity, Damien Hirst's 20-metre bronze and steel sculpture, that works as an amazing subject from multiple angles around the harbour. The combination of working boats, historic architecture, the chapel on its hill, and the sculpture at the pier gives you a lot to work with in a small area. Sunrise is strong here, with early light catching the boats and the face of Lantern Hill before the harbour fills with activity. At low tide the boats settle onto the harbour floor, which adds another unique way to capture the harbour. It is a location you can keep returning to shoot over and over again.
