East 7th Avenue

East 7th Avenue - Photo by fery_lim851 / 1

East 7th Avenue is a residential street in Vancouver's Mount Pleasant neighborhood, famous for its tunnel of mature cherry trees that arch over the road and create one of the city's most striking canopy shots. In spring, typically late March through April, the blossoms peak and transform the street into a pink corridor that draws photographers from across the city. Position yourself low in the middle of the road using the painted center line as a leading line, shooting toward the vanishing point where the branches meet overhead; a wide angle lens between 16mm and 35mm works well to emphasize the tunnel effect. Early morning on weekdays gives you the best chance of an empty street with soft, diffused light filtering through the blossoms. Fall is also worth a visit when the leaves turn gold and amber. Street parking is easy to find, and the light is gentlest on overcast days when harsh shadows are eliminated. (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada)
