Grant Street View

Grant Street View - Photo by whereitsb1 / 1

This tree-lined residential street in East Vancouver creates a natural tunnel effect as mature trees arch overhead, forming a canopy that makes for a compelling symmetrical composition. Stand in the middle of the road and shoot straight down the street to maximize the tunnel effect, using the pavement lines and rows of trees as leading lines that draw the eye deep into the frame. A moderate wide-angle to short telephoto lens, something in the 24-70mm range, works well here for compressing the canopy. Golden hour light filtering through the branches adds warmth and depth, though overcast days soften harsh shadows and let the colors of the foliage pop. Spring brings delicate blooms to the branches while autumn turns the canopy amber and gold, making those the two most rewarding seasons to visit. Early morning keeps the street clear of traffic so you can set up safely. (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada)
