Melkevoll Bretun

Melkevoll Bretun is a small cluster of traditional Norwegian cabins nestled at the foot of the Briksdalsbreen glacier arm in the Jostedalen valley, offering one of the most dramatic foreground-to-background compositions in western Norway. The rustic red and wooden cabins sit against a wall of steep, glaciated peaks, giving you a classic layered shot with warm human-scale structures in the foreground and wild alpine scenery filling the frame behind. Wide angles work best here, something in the 16-35mm range, letting you pull in both the cabins and the soaring ridgelines above. Overcast days soften the harsh contrasts between shadow and bright glacier ice, while early morning light catches the peaks before the valley floor loses its blue-hour coolness. Position yourself low and slightly back from the cabins to keep them anchored in the composition without blocking the glacier. The road access is straightforward and the area is easy to walk around.
