Nigardsbreen is a dramatic glacier arm of the Jostedalsbreen ice cap, where you can get remarkably close to towering walls of deep blue ice without technical climbing gear. The glacier terminus sits at the edge of a glacial lake, and the boat crossing to reach the ice adds a natural foreground opportunity with reflections on calm mornings. Once at the ice face, look for crevasses, meltwater channels, and textured surface details that reward a macro or mid-range lens; wide angles work well for showing the scale of the ice walls against the surrounding peaks. Overcast light softens harsh contrasts and makes the blue tones in the ice more vivid, but early morning on clear days brings raking light that adds depth and dimension. Come as early as possible in summer since crowds build quickly and can ruin compositions; a 24-70mm covers most situations well here. (Jostedalen, Vestland, Norway)
