Tucked into the greenery of Fort Canning Park, this outdoor escalator is one of Singapore's more unexpected architectural details, a long mechanical stairway cutting through dense tropical foliage that creates a striking contrast between man-made structure and lush vegetation. Position yourself at the base looking upward to use the escalator as a strong leading line drawing the eye into the canopy above, or shoot from the side to capture the layered geometry of the steps against the surrounding greenery. Overcast days work particularly well here since the thick tree cover can create harsh dappled shadows in direct sun, and soft diffused light brings out the greens evenly. A wide angle lens helps emphasize the perspective and depth, while a short telephoto lets you compress the layers of foliage. The escalator is free to use and gives you natural movement to incorporate into longer exposures. (Fort Canning Park, Singapore)
