Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary
A protected wetland reserve sitting within the city limits of Dubai, Ras Al Khor is best known for its large flocks of greater flamingos that wade through the shallow lagoons against a backdrop of the city skyline and distant skyscrapers. That contrast, wild birds in the foreground with urban towers rising behind them, is what makes this place genuinely unique. Three designated hides with viewing windows give you a stable platform to shoot from, and a telephoto lens in the 400-600mm range is essential since the birds keep their distance. Early morning offers the softest light and the most active flocks, and the golden hour glow reflecting off the water adds warmth to the whole scene. Visit between November and April when flamingo numbers are at their peak. Entry to the hides is free and managed by Dubai Municipality; just register at the gate before heading in.
