View of Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge

View of Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge - Photo by Daniel Rocque1 / 1

Tucked into the northern edge of the Royal Botanic Garden, this waterfront vantage point gives you one of the most iconic compositions in Australian photography, with the Sydney Opera House in the foreground and the Harbour Bridge arching across the background in a single frame. Position yourself along the low seawall to get the sails of the Opera House rising cleanly against the sky, or move slightly left or right to adjust how much water you include in the foreground. Sunset is the prime time to be here, as the light drops roughly behind and beyond the Opera House, painting the sails in warm gold and orange tones. A standard zoom or short telephoto in the 24 to 70mm range works well for compressing the scene. The garden path is easy to walk and the shooting position is open and unobstructed, with plenty of room to set up a tripod for long exposures at dusk. (Sydney, New South Wales, Australia)
