Waterfront Station

Waterfront Station - Photo by whereitsb1 / 1

Waterfront Station is one of Vancouver's most striking pieces of civic architecture, a neoclassical CPR railway terminal from 1914 with a bold red-brick facade, white Ionic columns, and a grand interior hall that rewards wide-angle shooting. Outside, position yourself across W Cordova Street to capture the full symmetry of the columns and facade; a 24-35mm lens works well for the exterior elevation. Inside, the main hall offers strong compositional opportunities with the repeating columns as leading lines, the paired clocks high on the east and west walls as focal points, and the Adelaide Langford landscape paintings above the colonnade adding color and detail for tighter shots. Midday light floods the interior through the large windows, making it one of the better indoor heritage spaces to shoot without flash. The building is a working transit hub, so weekday rush hours bring commuter activity that can add life or clutter depending on what you are after. (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada)
